Affirmative Defense:

A justification for the defendant having committed the accused crime, such as self-defense or duress.

The legal argument in an affirmative defense is essentially that while the defendant did in fact commit the crimianl act, there was a good reason for doing so.  Perhaps the most common example is self-defense.
