This chapter addresses how Alacrity handles specific situations and actions that fall outside the scope of a basic attack or standard skill check. You’ll find guidance here for resolving unique maneuvers, challenging circumstances, and tactical choices that add depth to gameplay.
Alacrity’s Approach
Instead of relying on an extensive list of predefined “feats” or special powers learned separately, Alacrity primarily models unique capabilities and challenging maneuvers through the clever application of its core mechanics:
- Skill Checks: Utilizing relevant skills like Athletics, Melee Combat, Acrobatics, Thievery, etc., often involving contested rolls or checks against a difficulty set by the GM.
- The Difficulty Ladder: Applying appropriate modifiers (+50% to -50%) based on the inherent complexity, risk, or situational factors of the action.
- Action Economy: Recognizing that complex maneuvers often require Declared Actions (potentially multiple, incurring penalties) or specific Free/Reflexive Actions as defined in Chapter 1.
- Specific Effects: Leveraging unique character abilities learned through the Magic system (spells, prayers, ki powers, etc.) that grant advantages or allow actions not normally possible.
- Roleplaying and GM Rulings: Encouraging players to describe their character’s intent creatively and empowering the GM to adjudicate outcomes based on logic, the situation, and potential skill checks.
The rest of this chapter provides guidance and specific rules for some common special circumstances and actions, demonstrating how to apply these core principles in play.
