Beyond weapons and armor, adventurers often rely on specialized tools to ply their trades, navigate dangers, or overcome obstacles. Possessing the right tools can make certain tasks possible or significantly easier, while attempting complex tasks without them might incur penalties on the Difficulty Ladder or be ruled impossible by the GM.

Note on Costs: Prices below are based on a system where 1 Gold Piece (GP) = 10 Silver Pieces (SP) = 100 Copper Pieces (CP), and 1 CP has the rough purchasing power of $1 USD. Weights are approximate and for groups using optional encumbrance rules.

• Alchemy Kit: Cost: 7 GP 5 SP (750 CP); Weight: 5 lbs; Relevant Skills: Alchemy; Notes: Required for most Alchemy skill checks involving brewing potions, poisons, or identifying substances through experimentation. Contains vials, burners, basic reagents, etc.
• Climbing Kit: Cost: 5 GP (500 CP); Weight: 12 lbs; Relevant Skills: Athletics; Notes: Includes pitons (10), rope (50ft quality hempen), harness, hammer. Grants a +10% bonus (one step easier) on Athletics checks made for climbing difficult surfaces.
• Crafting Tools (Specify Specialty): Cost: Varies (e.g., Woodcarver’s Tools 5 SP (50 CP), basic Smith’s Tools (Portable) 10 GP (1000 CP), Jeweler’s Tools 8 GP (800 CP)); Weight: Varies (5-20 lbs); Relevant Skills: Crafting (specific specialty); Notes: Required for making or repairing items using the associated Crafting specialty. Quality tools might grant a bonus on checks at GM discretion.
• Disguise Kit: Cost: 5 GP (500 CP); Weight: 3 lbs; Relevant Skills: Deception; Notes: Contains cosmetics, wigs, padding, spirit gum, etc. Allows for attempting complex physical disguises and may grant a bonus (+10% or more) on related Deception checks.
• Healer’s Kit: Cost: 10 GP (1000 CP); Weight: 3 lbs; Relevant Skills: First Aid, Medicine; Notes: Contains bandages, salves, splints, basic surgical tools (scalpels, probes, needles, suture). Grants a +10% bonus (one step easier) on First Aid or Medicine checks. May have limited uses for consumable components (e.g., 10 uses of specific salves/bandages) before needing replenishment (GM discretion).
• Herbalism Kit: Cost: 4 SP (40 CP); Weight: 3 lbs; Relevant Skills: Herbalism; Notes: Includes pouches, a good mortar and pestle, small knife/shears, basic preservatives/binding agents. Allows for the effective preparation and storage of herbs gathered via the Herbalism skill. May grant a bonus for complex preparations.
• Navigator’s Tools: Cost: 8 GP (800 CP); Weight: 2 lbs; Relevant Skills: Navigation; Notes: Includes a quality compass, basic sextant (if appropriate for setting tech level), charts/map-making tools, calipers. Grants a +10% bonus (one step easier) on Navigation checks, especially for long distances or sea travel. May be required for precise map reading or creation.
• Thieves’ Tools: Cost: 6 GP (600 CP); Weight: 1 lb; Relevant Skills: Thievery; Notes: Contains a set of lock picks, tension wrenches, probes, small mirror on a handle, fine pliers, skeleton key blanks. Required for attempting Thievery checks to open complex locks or disable mechanical traps. Quality tools might grant a bonus (+10%).
• Tinker’s Tools: Cost: 7 GP 5 SP (750 CP); Weight: 10 lbs; Relevant Skills: Crafting (general repair), Engineering (basic mechanisms); Notes: A versatile set of tools including files, small hammers, pliers, wire, saws, clamps, useful for repairing simple mechanical items, gear, or constructs. • Writing Kit: Cost: 3 SP (30 CP); Weight: 1 lb; Relevant Skills: Lore, Deception (Forgery), Navigation (Mapmaking); Notes: Contains ink pot (black), 2-3 quills or pens, a small knife for sharpening, sealing wax, several sheets of quality parchment. Required for creating documents, copying text, or drawing maps.
