Section 7 Overview
Section 7: Crime Science encompasses a multidisciplinary approach that applies scientific methods and principles to the study and prevention of crime. It integrates perspectives from criminology, psychology, urban planning, and technology to develop strategies that address the conditions facilitating criminal behavior. This section explores various frameworks and theories, including Situational Crime Prevention, Criminal Decision Making, Felson’s Chemistry of Crime, Clarke’s Hot Products, and the relationship between Crime and Place. Each subsection provides insights into different aspects of crime prevention, from modifying environmental factors to understanding the decision-making processes of criminals, aiming to reduce crime through practical, evidence-based interventions.
Section Level Student Learning Outcomes
- Understand the interdisciplinary nature of Crime Science, incorporating insights from criminology, psychology, urban planning, and technology to develop comprehensive crime prevention strategies.
- Analyze the role of environmental and situational factors in facilitating or deterring crime, applying concepts from Situational Crime Prevention and the study of Crime and Place.
- Evaluate the cognitive processes behind criminal decision-making and the impact of immediate environmental cues, integrating the rational choice model and principles from Felson’s Chemistry of Crime.
- Develop targeted crime prevention and intervention strategies by understanding the characteristics of “Hot Products” and the dynamics of crime occurrence in specific locations, utilizing crime mapping and hot spot analysis.
- Assess the ethical implications and the role of technology in crime prevention, considering privacy, community involvement, and the balance between security and accessibility.
