Recipe: Smothered Cabbage

Smothered Cabbage is a savory and hearty dish that combines the rich flavors of bacon and ham hock with the sweetness of cabbage. It’s a comforting meal that’s perfect for any gathering or a cozy night in.

Ingredients List

  • 1 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil
  • 0.75 pounds of bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 Pound Ham Hock
  • 2 Cups Chopped Onion
  • 0.25 Teaspoons Black Pepper
  • 0.5 Teaspoons Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Granulated Garlic
  • 4 Pounds Cabbage, Coarsely Chopped
  • 1 Teaspoon Cajun Seasoning

Preparation Steps

  1. Fry bacon in a Dutch oven until crisp.
  2. Add the ham hock, onions, pepper, and salt. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
  3. Add garlic and cabbage. If all the cabbage does not fit, add it in batches, adding more as each batch cooks down.
  4. Once all ingredients are in the pot, cook over medium-high heat until the cabbage is soft and tender (about 45 minutes).
  5. Remove the ham hock. If it is tender enough to debone, you may wish to add the pieces of meat back to the pot.
  6. Add the Cajun seasoning, stir, and remove from heat.
