Course: Introduction

In the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) context, property crime refers to offenses involving property theft or destruction, including burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson.

These crimes are categorized as property crimes because they involve the unlawful taking or destruction of property without the use or threat of force against an individual. Property crimes are reported separately from violent crimes, which involve the use or threat of force against an individual. The UCR is a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) program that collects and publishes crime data in the United States. The UCR provides a standard set of definitions and categories for reporting crime nationwide.
