Beyond the obvious tools of combat and protection, successful adventurers carry a variety of gear to handle the challenges of exploration, travel, and survival in dangerous environments.

  • Backpack: Cost: 2 SP 5 CP (25 CP); Weight: 5 lbs; Notes: A sturdy cloth or leather pack with shoulder straps, suitable for carrying gear. Can typically hold around 30-40 lbs of equipment.
  • Bedroll: Cost: 2 SP (20 CP); Weight: 7 lbs; Notes: Bedding suitable for sleeping in the wilderness or on rough floors.
  • Blanket: Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: 3 lbs; Notes: A simple wool blanket for warmth.
  • Candle: Cost: 1 CP each; Weight: Negligible; Notes: Provides dim light in a 5-foot radius. Burns for about 1 hour. (Often sold in small bundles).
  • Case, Map or Scroll: Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: 1 lb; Notes: A leather or wood tube to protect maps and scrolls from the elements.
  • Chain (10 feet): Cost: 2 SP (20 CP); Weight: 10 lbs; Notes: Strong iron chain with links. Can support considerable weight.
  • Chalk (1 piece): Cost: 1 CP per piece (or a few pieces for 1 CP); Weight: Negligible; Notes: Used for marking surfaces temporarily.
  • Crowbar: Cost: 1 SP 5 CP (15 CP); Weight: 5 lbs; Notes: A heavy iron bar useful for prying things open or as an improvised weapon (treat as Club). May grant a bonus on Strength checks for forcing doors/chests.
  • Fishing Tackle: Cost: 1 SP 5 CP (15 CP); Weight: 4 lbs; Notes: Includes a simple wooden rod, line, hooks, and lures. Used with the Survival skill for catching fish.
  • Flask: Cost: 5 CP; Weight: 1 lb (empty); Notes: Ceramic or metal, holds about 1 pint.
  • Waterskin: Cost: 2 SP (20 CP); Weight: 1 lb (empty); Notes: Holds about 2 pints (1 quart) of liquid. Lighter than a flask when empty.
  • Flint and Steel: Cost: 5 CP; Weight: Negligible; Notes: Used to create sparks for starting fires. Requires tinder. Success may depend on conditions (Survival skill).
  • Grappling Hook: Cost: 2 SP (20 CP); Weight: 4 lbs; Notes: An iron hook with barbs, typically used with rope for climbing or securing lines.
  • Hammer (Basic): Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: 3 lbs; Notes: Basic hammer for pounding pitons, spikes, or minor construction.
  • Ink (1 oz. bottle, black): Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: Negligible; Notes: Standard black ink for writing. Requires a pen or quill. (Included in Writing Kit).
  • Lamp, Hooded: Cost: 3 SP (30 CP); Weight: 2 lbs; Notes: Casts bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for another 30 feet. Burns oil. Hood can be closed to hide the light.
  • Lock, Basic: Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: 1 lb; Notes: A simple iron padlock with a key. Can be picked with Thievery skill (Challenging difficulty).
  • Manacles: Cost: 3 SP (30 CP); Weight: 6 lbs; Notes: Iron restraints for binding wrists. Requires a key or Thievery check to open without one.
  • Mess Kit: Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: 1 lb; Notes: Tin or simple wooden plate, cup, and basic cutlery for eating.
  • Mirror, Small Steel: Cost: 1 SP 5 CP (15 CP); Weight: 0.5 lb; Notes: Highly polished steel mirror, useful for looking around corners or signaling.
  • Oil (Flask, for lamp): Cost: 3 CP per flask; Weight: 1 lb; Notes: Usually whale or vegetable oil. Fuels a standard lamp for about 6 hours. Can be thrown to create a small slippery surface or ignited (deals minor fire damage).
  • Parchment (one sheet): Cost: 1 CP per sheet; Weight: Negligible; Notes: Treated animal skin for writing or drawing. (Included in Writing Kit).
  • Piton: Cost: 2 CP each; Weight: 0.25 lbs; Notes: Metal spike hammered into cracks for climbing anchor points. Requires a hammer.
  • Pole (10-foot): Cost: 5 CP; Weight: 7 lbs; Notes: Sturdy wooden pole, useful for probing, vaulting, or reaching.
  • Pouch, Belt: Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: 1 lb; Notes: Leather or sturdy cloth pouch worn on a belt, typically holds coins or small items.
  • Rations (1 day): Cost: 8 CP; Weight: 2 lbs; Notes: Dried meat, hardtack, nuts, and cheese. Basic sustenance for one person for one day.
  • Rope, Hempen (50 feet): Cost: 1 SP 5 CP (15 CP); Weight: 10 lbs; Notes: Standard rope, reasonably strong (supports ~300 lbs).
  • Rope, Silk (50 feet): Cost: 1 GP (100 CP); Weight: 5 lbs; Notes: Stronger and lighter than hempen rope (supports ~450 lbs). A luxury item.
  • Sack (common burlap): Cost: 1 CP; Weight: 0.5 lb; Notes: Simple sack, can hold roughly 30 lbs or a bushel of goods.
  • Sealing Wax (stick): Cost: 5 CP; Weight: Negligible; Notes: Used with a seal (signet ring or stamp) to secure documents. (Included in Writing Kit).
  • Shovel (small/folding): Cost: 2 SP (20 CP); Weight: 5 lbs; Notes: Collapsible or small shovel for digging.
  • Signal Whistle: Cost: 8 CP; Weight: Negligible; Notes: Loud whistle made of wood, bone, or metal for signaling over distances.
  • Soap (bar): Cost: 2 CP; Weight: Negligible; Notes: Basic bar of soap for washing.
  • Spikes, Iron (10): Cost: 1 SP (10 CP) for a set of 10; Weight: 5 lbs total; Notes: Large iron spikes, useful for wedging doors shut, climbing aids, etc. Requires a hammer.
  • Tent, Two-Person (basic): Cost: 5 GP (500 CP); Weight: 20 lbs; Notes: Provides shelter from elements for two people. Made of treated canvas or similar. Requires time to set up and take down.
  • Tinderbox: Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: 1 lb; Notes: Contains flint, steel, and dry tinder (charcloth, dried moss) in a small box. Makes starting fires easier than flint & steel alone (+10% bonus on Survival checks for fire-starting).
  • Torch: Cost: 1 CP each; Weight: 1 lb; Notes: Wooden rod tipped with pitch-soaked rags or similar flammable material. Sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light for another 20 feet. Burns for 1 hour.
  • Vial (empty glass): Cost: 2 CP each; Weight: Negligible; Notes: Small glass container with stopper, holds liquids like potions or ink.
  • Whetstone: Cost: 5 CP; Weight: 1 lb; Notes: Used to sharpen bladed weapons and tools.
