Appendix A: Generic Effects

Chapter 7 established the unified system through which all supernatural abilities function in Alacrity: the Magic skill, Mana Points (MP), and learned Effects. Chapter 8 discussed how the specific nature and availability of magic are defined by the Game Master’s worldbuilding choices. This appendix provides concrete examples of Generic Effects that can be used as a starting point or inspiration for populating your campaign world with such powers.

The Effects listed here are presented with generic names and descriptions, focusing on their core mechanical function (healing, dealing damage, buffing, debuffing, utility, etc.). They are designed to be adaptable to various narrative sources. The same mechanical Effect described here could be flavored as:

  • An arcane spell meticulously researched by a Wizard.
  • A divine miracle granted to a Cleric or Paladin.
  • A primal invocation whispered by a Druid or Shaman.
  • A focused expression of ki mastered by a Monk.
  • An innate psionic talent.
  • A power derived from a pact with an otherworldly entity.

Important: These are examples and a toolkit, not an exhaustive or mandatory list. The Game Master has the final authority to decide which of these Effects (if any) exist in their specific campaign setting. GMs may modify them, rename them to fit the world’s lore, or create new Effects based on the principles in Chapter 7 and Chapter 8. The availability of any Effect to a player character always depends on their Narrative Anchor and the requirement of Discovery followed by spending 5 XP to learn it.

Each entry below details a specific Effect, including suggested MP cost, range, duration, casting time, concentration requirements (if any), and its mechanical impact within the Alacrity system. Use these as building blocks to bring supernatural elements to life at the table.
