Barbarian

Alacrity Fantasy, A TTRPG by Adam J.. McKee and James G. Walker, Jr.

Barbarians are the living storm of Alacrity’s wild places—warriors who learned to fight by instinct rather than drill. Whether you hail from snow‑choked wastes, jungle ruins, or wind‑torn mesas, you lean on raw Strength, vast Body, and potentially the power of Raging Blood when steel and sinew alone won’t suffice.

Core Build

  • Primary Stats: Strength (for savage damage); Body (for a deep pool of Hit and Stun Points).
  • Secondary Stats: Dexterity (for Dodges and Athletics); Mind (for Survival lore or a spark of cunning).
  • Signature Skills: Melee Combat, Unarmed Combat, Athletics, Survival, Intimidation, Dodge.

Gear

Two‑handed weapons (greataxe, greatsword), layered hides or light leather armor (like Leather or Studded Leather), and a simple adventuring kit.

Channeling Primal Fury (Using Effects)

While many barbarians rely purely on martial prowess, some tap into a deeper, primal fury. Like any character using supernatural abilities in Alacrity, accessing these requires engaging with the core magic system:

  • Initiate Magic: To gain a Mana Pool (MP) necessary for using effects like Raging Blood, you must spend 20 XP to initiate the Magic skill. Your starting Magic skill percentage equals your Mind statistic, and your Max MP equals this percentage. (Note: This represents unlocking the potential to channel inner power, even if it manifests as raw fury rather than scholarly spells.)
  • Learn Effects: Specific abilities like Raging Blood are treated as “Effects.” Once narratively justified or discovered (GM approval), you must spend 5 XP to learn and inscribe the Effect.

Signature Effect: Raging Blood

  • (Effect details referencing Appendix A): This Effect allows the barbarian to enter a battle fury, spending 1 MP per round as an Action to gain combat benefits (like +10% Melee Combat/Unarmed Combat attack rolls OR temporary Soak dice equal to half Body).
  • No Roll Required: Unlike many magical Effects, activating or maintaining Raging Blood does not typically require a Magic skill roll. You simply spend the MP and Action.
  • Heroic Casting: If your MP pool is depleted, you may choose to fuel the rage by spending Hit Points instead (1 HP per 1 MP cost), suffering the consequences of Heroic Casting (HP loss is unrecoverable by magic, potential penalties).
