Creating items, brewing concoctions, or repairing gear requires not only the relevant Crafting, Alchemy, or Herbalism skills but also the right equipment and raw materials. While simple repairs or preparations might be done with basic tools anywhere, more complex projects often demand specialized gear and a dedicated workspace.
Toolkits
As listed in the Tools section (p. XX), specialized portable kits are essential for most crafting endeavors. This includes items like basic Smith’s Tools, Woodcarver’s Tools, Leatherworker’s Tools, an Alchemy Kit, or an Herbalism Kit. Attempting tasks associated with these skills without the appropriate toolkit is often impossible or incurs significant penalties on the Difficulty Ladder.
Workspaces
Large-scale or intricate projects typically require a dedicated workspace, such as a forge for metalworking, an alchemist’s laboratory for complex brewing, or a carpenter’s workshop with benches and larger tools. Access to such facilities might be rented (see Services, p. XX), owned, or require finding one available for use (perhaps via negotiation or questing). Portable toolkits are generally insufficient for tasks like forging plate armor or brewing highly complex magical potions.
Common Raw Materials
The foundation of any crafted item is its raw materials. Acquiring these involves foraging (for herbs/wood), mining, hunting, or purchasing them from suppliers. Costs and availability vary enormously based on location, rarity, and quality. The following are examples of baseline costs for common materials:
- Cloth (Bolt, ~10 yards): Typical Cost: 5-10 SP (50-100 CP); Weight: 5 lbs; Notes: Used for clothing, sails, sacks, components of padded armor. Price assumes basic cotton or wool; silk costs significantly more (GP value).
- Glass Vial (empty): Typical Cost: 2 CP each; Weight: Negligible; Notes: Empty container for potions, inks, reagents. (Also listed under Adventuring Gear).
- Herbs, Common (Bundle): Typical Cost: 1-5 CP per bundle; Weight: 0.5 lb; Notes: Basic herbs used in Herbalism or simple Alchemy. Price increases dramatically for rare or magical herbs.
- Ink (1 oz. bottle, black): Typical Cost: 1 SP (10 CP); Weight: Negligible; Notes: Basic black ink. Colored or special inks cost more. (Also listed under Adventuring Gear).
- Iron (Ingot or per lb): Typical Cost: 1 SP (10 CP) per lb; Weight: 1 lb; Notes: Basic metal for many tools, weapons, and armor components. Price assumes usable refined ingot/bar.
- Leather (Hide or Square Foot): Typical Cost: 1-3 SP (10-30 CP) per sq. ft.; Weight: ~0.5 lb per sq. ft.; Notes: Used for leather armor, pouches, straps, clothing components. Price varies significantly with quality (thickness, tanning).
- Parchment (Sheet): Typical Cost: 1 CP per sheet; Weight: Negligible; Notes: For scrolls, maps, documents. Assumes standard quality; fine vellum would cost more. (Also listed under Adventuring Gear).
- Reagents, Basic Alchemical (per measure): Typical Cost: 2 SP (20 CP) per measure; Weight: Varies; Notes: Common salts, acids, minerals used in Alchemy. A “measure” is roughly what’s needed for one typical non-magical alchemical process (GM discretion). Rare or magical reagents are far more expensive and harder to find.
- Steel (Ingot or per lb): Typical Cost: 3-5 SP (30-50 CP) per lb; Weight: 1 lb; Notes: Higher quality metal for better weapons and armor. Requires more skill/higher temperatures to work than iron. Price assumes usable refined ingot/bar.
- Stone (per usable block/lb): Typical Cost: 1 CP per 10 lbs (rough material); Weight: 10 lbs+; Notes: Used in construction (Crafting/Engineering). This cost is for relatively unworked quarry stone; dressed or carved stone costs vastly more due to labor. Cost also varies by type (granite, marble etc).
- Wood (per usable log/board foot): Typical Cost: 1-5 CP per board foot; Weight: ~3 lbs per board foot; Notes: Used for construction, furniture, weapon shafts, shields. Cost depends heavily on type (common pine vs. sturdy oak or flexible ash) and quality (seasoning, lack of knots).
