Degrees of Difficulty

Alacrity Fantasy, A TTRPG by Adam J.. McKee and James G. Walker, Jr.

When circumstances tilt the odds, the GM chooses a modifier from the ladder below. Each rung shifts the target number by 10 percent, ranging from a generous +50 percent edge to a crushing ‑50 percent handicap. Apply the modifier to the character’s target number before the roll.

  • Trivial (+50 %) – almost automatic: strolling a wide bridge, recalling a common fact.

  • Effortless (+40 %) – no real challenge but worth a roll if tension is high.

  • Easy (+30 %) – clear footing, bright light, ample time, or perfect tools.

  • Routine (+20 %) – minor help from gear, decent conditions, or steady footing.

  • Favourable (+10 %) – slight edge: mild assistance, good light, modest aid.

  • Everyday (0 %) – standard circumstances; nothing aids or hinders.

  • Challenging (‑10 %) – dim light, mild stress, drizzle, or a small obstacle.

  • Hard (‑20 %) – slick surfaces, tight deadlines, stout locks, or heavy pressure.

  • Very Hard (‑30 %) – driving rain, total darkness, intricate mechanisms.

  • Extreme (‑40 %) – gale‑force winds, blinding smoke, masterwork clockwork.

  • Near‑Impossible (‑50 %) – feats worthy of legend or desperate luck.

Tasks that stretch beyond Near‑Impossible may incur additional situational penalties or simply be ruled unattainable until conditions improve. Stack this difficulty modifier with any others in play—wounds, multi‑action fatigue, cover, or Threading the Needle penalties.
