Lending a Hand

Alacrity Fantasy, A TTRPG by Adam J.. McKee and James G. Walker, Jr.

Teamwork can tip the scales. A character with at least some training in the relevant skill may spend an action to assist the primary actor.

  • Assist roll: the helper makes a normal skill check against the same difficulty grade.

  • Success: grants the primary actor a +10 percent bonus.

  • Critical success: grants +20 percent.

  • Failure: no bonus.

  • Critical failure: imposes a ‑10 percent penalty instead—fumbled tools, bad advice, or clumsy interference.

Only the first three successful helpers count, capping the teamwork bonus at +30 percent (or +60 percent if all three score criticals, at the GM’s discretion). Helpers must devote their turn to assisting and cannot aid tasks they themselves are untrained in. Multiple helpers can act in the same round, provided they have declared the action and are positioned to contribute.

The difficulty ladder assumes at least basic proficiency; winging it or relying on shaky help drives the odds toward the impossible—but in Alacrity, bold gambles, steady allies, and a touch of luck can still snatch triumph from chaos.
