Magic Items

Alacrity Fantasy, A TTRPG by Adam J.. McKee and James G. Walker, Jr.

Beyond mundane equipment, many Alacrity worlds contain objects imbued with permanent magical Effects. These range from simple enchanted trinkets, like amulets that offer minor protection (+1d10 Soak) or ever-glowing gemstones, all the way to legendary artifacts capable of altering the fate of kingdoms. Magic items grant abilities or bonuses exceeding those of standard gear, allowing characters to achieve extraordinary feats.

World-Specific Nature of Magic Items

It is crucial for the Game Master to understand that the nature, appearance, frequency, and power level of magic items are fundamental world-building choices. They should directly reflect the tone and established lore of your specific campaign setting. Magic items that are common or feel natural in one style of world might feel completely out of place in another.

For example: The glowing gemstone “Spheres” common in many Brandon Sanderson novels store magical energy and would feel perfectly normal there, used to power devices or spells as part of the setting’s infrastructure. Such items, however, would be jarringly out of place in the gritty, lower-magic settings typical of David Gemmell, where enchanted items are more likely to be rare, ancient artifacts with unique histories and possibly dangerous drawbacks. Consistency is key; tailor the magic items available in your game to fit the feel and rules of the world you are presenting.

Mechanics and Acquisition

Magic items are typically rare, often unique. Their specific powers, how they are activated (if activation is needed), any limitations or potential drawbacks (like curses or required attunement), and the means by which they are acquired are all determined by the Game Master based on the item’s history and the campaign’s needs. Common methods of acquisition include:

  • Finding them as part of treasure hoards.
  • Receiving them as rewards for significant quests or service.
  • Potentially crafting them via the demanding Enchanting Ritual detailed in Chapter 7 (Magic).

Reflecting their general rarity and value, magic items are not typically found on standard equipment purchase lists and are rarely bought and sold in common markets like mundane gear.
