Might measures your raw physical power—the ability to exert force, lift tremendous weight, and smash obstacles through brute strength. Unlike skills that rely on finesse or technique, Might is pure muscular output. It is used when an overwhelming force is required to break, move, or overpower.
When You Use It:
Might applies when:
-
Forcing open barred doors, gates, or stuck portcullises
-
Lifting or moving heavy debris, carts, or unconscious companions
-
Bending iron bars or breaking manacles by hand
-
Smashing through weakened walls, barricades, or obstacles
-
Grappling and overpowering opponents through sheer strength
Stat Used:
-
Always Strength.
Mechanical Effects:
-
Success:
You overcome the challenge through raw power. -
Critical Success (01):
You succeed with overwhelming force or efficiency, saving time, intimidating foes, or avoiding side effects. -
Failure:
You fail to move or break the target, often suffering minor consequences (wasted effort, fatigue, or noise). -
Critical Failure (00):
You suffer a setback—potential self-injury, damaged equipment, or vulnerability.
Situational Modifiers:
Apply the Difficulty Ladder based on weight, resistance, and circumstances:
-
+50%: Simple tasks, like opening an unlocked heavy door
-
+40%: Lifting something cumbersome but manageable
-
+30%: Shoving aside loose rubble or small debris
-
+20%: Forcing open a standard locked door
-
+10%: Carrying an unconscious ally through rough terrain
-
0%: Moving heavy objects under normal conditions
-
–10%: Breaking iron manacles or hardened restraints
-
–20%: Smashing through thick or reinforced obstacles
-
–30%: Lifting a portcullis or object while under stress or danger
-
–40%: Destroying fortified structures or complex mechanisms
-
–50%: Achieving impossible feats, like lifting massive gates alone
Untrained Use:
Might may always be used untrained, as it reflects basic physical effort. However, trained characters are more practiced at applying strength efficiently.
Narrative Examples:
-
A barbarian rips apart a barricade blocking the only escape route.
-
A knight lifts a wounded comrade and carries them from the battlefield.
-
A gladiator crushes his enemy’s shield and drives them to the ground.
-
A sorceress, caught in rubble, strains to shift a beam pinning her leg.
Might is an excellent pacing tool. Success often opens paths and speeds up scenarios, while failure creates tension and obstacles. Use Critical Successes to grant cinematic moments of triumph, such as smashing through a gate in seconds or breaking chains dramatically. Importantly, Might should be reserved for tasks beyond ordinary human effort. Lifting a backpack or opening a standard door does not require Might. This skill applies when force alone is the only way forward—breaking, bending, or moving something that the average person simply could not manage. In harsh environments or dangerous situations, Might becomes the tool of last resort to overcome overwhelming physical obstacles.
