Scroll of the Shrouded Moon – Inscription VII

The Smoke Screen – “Smoke obscures vision, hiding reality behind a cloudy veil. Let misinformation be your smoke screen in the battlefield of strategies, obscuring the true path, leading your opponents astray.”

The “Smoke Screen” principle revolves around the use of misinformation to obscure the truth and misdirect opponents. Just as a literal smoke screen hinders clear sight and makes it difficult to discern what’s happening behind it, the metaphorical use of a smoke screen in strategic dealings involves spreading false or misleading information to confuse adversaries, cover your true intentions, or lead them down a wrong path.

Applying the Principle to Political Power

The application of the “Smoke Screen” principle in politics can be highly effective. Politicians could employ this strategy by disseminating incorrect or misleading information, creating a fog of confusion that hides their true intentions or actions. This could be used to divert attention from controversial decisions, to mislead opponents, or to manipulate public opinion. When done skillfully, this strategy allows politicians to maintain control over narratives and to strategically advance their agendas under the cover of confusion.

Historical Example

A historical example of the effective use of the “Smoke Screen” principle comes from the era of the Roman Republic. During the Second Punic War in 216 BC, the Carthaginian general Hannibal was facing the Roman army in the Battle of Cannae. Outnumbered and seemingly outmatched, Hannibal needed a way to turn the tables on the Roman forces.

Hannibal decided to use a metaphorical “Smoke Screen” by giving the Romans misinformation about his battle formation. He positioned his weakest troops in the center of his line and his strongest on the flanks, contrary to conventional tactics of the time. The Romans, believing they could easily break through the center and defeat the Carthaginians, launched a heavy attack there.

However, this was exactly what Hannibal wanted. As the Romans pushed against the center, the stronger Carthaginian flanks enveloped the Roman forces, leading to one of the most disastrous defeats in Roman military history. This illustrates the effective use of misinformation as a ‘Smoke Screen’ to deceive and defeat an opponent, even against overwhelming odds.
