What You Will Learn

In this section, you’ll discover the critical role of hypotheses and literature reviews in research, including how to identify and evaluate scholarly publications. You’ll learn about the various types of scholarly and non-scholarly publications, their characteristics, and how to use them effectively in academic research. Additionally, you’ll understand the importance of evaluating information quality and distinguishing between reliable and unreliable sources, including the appropriate use of internet sources and specialized encyclopedias.

  • SLO 1: Understand the importance of hypotheses and literature review in research, including the definition and characteristics of scholarly publications, and the critical role of peer review in ensuring the quality of scientific information.
  • SLO 2: Recognize the various types of scholarly and non-scholarly publications, their characteristics, and their appropriate uses in academic research, along with the significance of academic databases and the need for assistance in identifying credible sources.
  • SLO 3: Grasp the necessity of evaluating information quality, differentiating between reliable and unreliable sources, and understanding the limitations and appropriate uses of different types of references, including internet-only sources and field-specific encyclopedias.
