Reading Assignment for Section 3.5

Read the following subsection from our online textbook: Section 3.5: Hypothesis Testing.

What You Will Learn

In this section, you’ll understand the formulation and significance of research hypotheses in social science, learning to develop predictions based on formal theories and specify relationships between variables. You’ll differentiate between directional and nondirectional hypotheses. You’ll gain proficiency in the concept of the null hypothesis, learning the purpose and process of statistical significance tests in evaluating hypotheses and comprehending the implications of different research outcomes. Additionally, you’ll master the concepts of statistical power, clinical versus statistical significance, and effect size, recognizing their roles in determining the reliability and practical implications of research findings.

Student Learning Outcomes for Section 3.5

  • SLO 1: Understand the formulation and significance of research hypotheses in social science, including developing predictions based on formal theories, specifying relationships between variables, and differentiating between directional and nondirectional hypotheses.
  • SLO 2: Gain proficiency in understanding and applying the concept of the null hypothesis, learning the purpose and process of statistical significance tests in evaluating hypotheses, and comprehend the implications of different research outcomes in experimental and nonexperimental settings.
  • SLO 3: Master the concepts of statistical power, clinical versus statistical significance, and effect size, recognizing their roles in determining the reliability and practical implications of research findings, and adapt to situations with information scarcity by appropriately formulating research purposes or questions.
