Error terms in Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) refer to the difference between observed and predicted data.

What are Error Terms?

Let’s start with the basics. In research, we often use models, which are like maps that help us understand how different things relate to each other. In social research, a common model is the Structural Equation Model (SEM). Now, “error terms” are a part of this model.

The model could use factors like age, education level, and type of crime. The error term would be the difference between the model’s prediction and the actual outcome for each person in the study.

Social Work Application

In social work, a professional might use SEM to understand factors influencing mental health outcomes among teenagers in a community. Their model might include factors like family support, school environment, and substance use. The error terms would show the difference between the model’s predictions and the real-life experiences of the teenagers.

Political Science Context

A political science researcher might use SEM to study voting behavior. They might create a model predicting how factors like age, education, and economic status affect a person’s likelihood to vote. The error terms would indicate the difference between these predictions and the actual voting behaviors observed.
