Reading Assignment for Section 5.1
Read the following subsection from our online textbook: Section 5.1: Quantitative Research.
What You Will Learn
In this section, you’ll understand the nature and scope of quantitative research, which relies on numerical data for explanations, predictions, and control, and learn to distinguish it from qualitative methods. You’ll explore different descriptive methods like surveys and observational studies. You’ll develop the ability to analyze relationships between variables, understanding positive and negative correlations, the limitations of correlational studies in establishing cause-and-effect relationships, and the significance of considering alternative explanations and spurious correlations. Additionally, you’ll gain proficiency in the use and interpretation of single-subject research designs, including the A-B-A-B design, graphical representation, interpreting graph trends, and analyzing extended treatments to evaluate individualized treatment effects.
Student Learning Outcomes for Section 5.1
- SLO 1: Understand the nature and scope of quantitative research, including its basis on numerical data for explanations, predictions, and control, and distinguish it from qualitative methods, while learning about different descriptive methods like surveys and observational studies.
- SLO 2: Develop the ability to explore and analyze relationships between variables in quantitative research, understanding positive and negative correlations, the limitations of correlational studies in establishing cause-and-effect relationships, and the significance of considering alternative explanations and spurious correlations.
- SLO 3: Gain proficiency in the use and interpretation of single-subject research designs, including understanding characteristics, the A-B-A-B design, graphical representation, interpreting graph trends, and analyzing extended treatments, to evaluate individualized treatment effects in applied research settings.
