Statement of Purpose

Welcome to Fundamentals of Crime Prevention, an open educational resource (OER) textbook that aims to provide a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for students. This freely available online textbook embodies modern thinking and best practices in textbook pedagogy while also offering the unique advantage of immediate reader feedback to enhance the content continually.

Our purpose is to offer a clear and accessible resource that equips students with a solid foundation in crime prevention. By making this textbook freely available online, we ensure that learners from diverse backgrounds can access high-quality educational materials without financial barriers. This OER version also enables readers to actively participate in the improvement of the textbook by providing immediate feedback to the authors regarding the content, thereby fostering a collaborative and iterative learning experience.

Course Level SLOs

Upon completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Define and explain the core principles of the Crime Opportunity Prevention (COP) System and its relationship to Routine Activities Theory (RAT) (Section 1).
  • Identify common types of crimes, their trends, and contributing factors in various settings (residential, business, public spaces, educational institutions, transportation) (Sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).
  • Conduct comprehensive security and risk assessments of different environments, including homes, businesses, public spaces, schools, and transportation systems, to identify vulnerabilities (Sections 2, 3, 4, 6, 7).
  • Develop and implement effective crime prevention strategies tailored to specific settings, incorporating physical security measures, technological solutions, community engagement, and policy considerations (Sections 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).
  • Explain the role of community engagement, education, and awareness in preventing crime and fostering safer environments (Sections 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).
  • Discuss the importance of cybersecurity in the digital age, identify common cyber threats, and implement measures to protect personal and business information (Section 5).
  • Explain the role of law enforcement in combating cybercrime, including the use of digital forensics, international cooperation, and public awareness campaigns (Section 5).
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of crime prevention strategies and policies through continuous monitoring, assessment, and adaptation (Sections 4, 6, 7, 8).
  • Identify emerging crime trends and challenges in the future and discuss innovative approaches and technologies for addressing them (Section 8).
  • Apply the Crime Opportunity Prevention (COP) framework to analyze crime situations, develop prevention strategies, and create safer environments in various settings (All Sections).
