Course: Introduction

In the context of the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) system, simple assault is a type of violent crime that involves an unlawful physical attack or attempted attack on another person.

This type of assault is typically characterized by the absence of a weapon and minor or no injuries to the victim.

Examples of simple assault may include pushing, shoving, slapping, or punching another person, as well as threatening someone with bodily harm. It is important to note that even if the victim does not sustain any physical injuries, the perpetrator can still be charged with simple assault.

Simple assault is typically considered a misdemeanor offense, although the severity of the charge can vary depending on the specific circumstances of the incident. In some cases, simple assault may be elevated to aggravated assault if a weapon was used or if the victim sustained more serious injuries.
