Rangers are the guardians of untamed places—master trackers, deadly marksmen, and survivors who know every whisper the wind brings. Whether you learned your craft in a frontier scout‑company, among deep‑wood reavers, or under the guidance of a tribal hunt‑master, your strength comes from equal parts precision and primal instinct.
Core Build
- Primary Stats: Dexterity (drives Ranged Combat, Stealth, Athletics); Mind (powers Survival, Perception, and optional primal effects).
- Secondary Stats: Body (provides resilience for harsh conditions); Strength (supports melee options, helps heft heavy bows/crossbows).
- Signature Skills: Ranged Combat, Survival, Perception, Stealth, Athletics, Animal Handling (for mounts or tracking companions).
Equipment
Rangers typically favor gear that aids movement and survival in the wild. Common equipment includes Leather or Studded Hide armor for silent movement, a Longbow or Crossbow with a quiver of arrows/bolts, a hunting knife, rope, and a small pack containing tracking essentials or an Herbalism Kit. Every tool earns its keep by day; every arrow counts by dawn.
Hunter’s Edge
A ranger shines by blending terrain mastery with pinpoint attacks. You spend XP to hone your core skills—raising Ranged Combat for deadly accuracy at distance, Survival to track prey across miles, and Stealth to close the gap unseen. Effectively managing multi‑action penalties allows you to balance rapid shots against careful aim, and skillful use of Threading the Needle lets you target a charging beast’s flank or the joint in a war‑warg’s armor.
Optional Primal Effects (Using the Magic System)
Some rangers develop a deeper, primal connection to the wild, granting access to optional abilities represented by “Effects” learned via the core Magic → Mana Points → Effects system:
- If you wish to bind a spark of the wild to your will, you might learn Effects such as Hunter’s Mark (focusing deadly intent), Camouflage (magical stealth), or ways to magically interact with or bolster an Animal Companion (using Effects like Companion Bond). (See Appendix A for details).
- Requirements: Choosing this path means engaging with the magic system. You must spend 20 XP to initiate the Magic skill (gaining an MP pool equal to your Mind score) and then 5 XP to learn each specific Effect once narratively appropriate (GM approval). Casting these Effects requires spending the associated MP cost.
