Reading Assignment for Section 3.3

Read the following subsection from our online textbook: Section 3.3: Scales of Measurement.

What You Will Learn

In this section, you’ll gain an understanding of the four main scales of measurement in social science research: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio. You’ll learn how each scale describes variables differently and influences the type of statistics used. You’ll develop the ability to apply and differentiate between these scales, understanding the nuances of each. Additionally, you’ll master the selection of appropriate measurement levels for research, considering the nature of the variable, the insights required, and the balance between research objectives and practical feasibility.

Student Learning Outcomes for Section 3.3

  • SLO 1: Gain an understanding of the four main scales of measurement in social science research: nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio, recognizing how each scale describes variables differently and influences the type of statistics used.
  • SLO 2: Develop the ability to apply and differentiate between the various scales of measurement, including understanding the nuances of nominal scales for simple categorization, ordinal scales for ranking, interval scales for consistent intervals, and ratio scales with an absolute zero point.
  • SLO 3: Master the selection of appropriate measurement levels for research, considering the nature of the variable, the depth of insights required, and the balance between research objectives, data nature, and practical feasibility, while recognizing the limitations and advantages of each measurement scale.
